The initial evaluation for snoring is to perform an accurate history and physical examination to identify the site of the obstruction responsible for snoring. Often a history of gasping and struggling for breath is present. If necessary, a sleep study is ordered to grade the severity of sleep apnea.
Upon review of the sleep study, a customized treatment plan will be formulated to treat the snoring and apnea. This may include improving your nasal obstruction, removing redundant tissue in the back of the throat, or CPAP to open the airway at night with positive air pressure, or possibly an oral appliance.
